Cristóbal Ascencio (Guadalajara, Mexico, 1988) is a photographer and visual artist whose work explores the complex relationship between images and memory, investigating how we construct identities and realities through this correspondence. With a degree in Audiovisual Media from the CAAV in Jalisco and a Masters in Contemporary Photography from EFTI in Madrid, his practice transcends traditional photography towards new forms of visual creation such as virtual reality, data manipulation and photogrammetry.
His project “ Las flores mueren dos veces” has received wide international recognition, being exhibited at PhotoEspaña (2024), Las Cigarreras Alicante (2024) and several international festivals. This work earned him the Art Photo Bcn Award, the first prize at the Panoramic Festival and his inclusion in the prestigious list "Ones to Watch 2022" of the British Journal of Photography.
His solo exhibitions include “ Estrategias de recuperación” at the Instituto Cultural de México en España (2025) and “Las flores mueren dos veces” at the Getxo photo festival (2022), and Las Cigarreras Alicante (2024). His group exhibitions span international platforms such as Foam Amsterdam (2024), the Athens Photo Festival (2024), the Noorderlicht International Photography Festival (2023), Casa del Lago UNAM (CDMX, 2025) and the Deutsche Börse Foundation for Photography (Frankfurt, 2025). He has also participated in PhotoSlam at Les Rencontres d'Arles (2021).
Ascencio is part of the artists selected for FOAM Talent 2024-25 and has been invited to prestigious platforms such as Plat(t)form 2023 by Fotomuseum Winterthur. In 2024 he won the First Prize in Foto Canal Libro de Fotografía and has held artistic residencies in TextielLab (Netherlands), Villa Perochon (France), Return to Ithaca (Greece) and Menorca Doc Fest (Spain).
His work is part of important private and public collections such as Art Vontobel in Switzerland, SCAN Network in London, Fundación ENAIRE in Spain. He has received grants such as ARTeCHÓ (2023), FONCA Jóvenes Creadores (2022-2023) and Horizontes Jalisco (2021-2022).
His work has been published in specialized media such as FOAM Magazine, Revista Exit, Aesthetica Magazine, Chinese Photography Magazine and British Journal of Photography. In 2024 he published his photobook "Las flores mueren dos veces" with Editorial Dispara and was included in the book "Desbordar el espejo" by Joan Fontcuberta.
In the teaching field, he teaches the workshop "Introduction to auteur photography" at CIEE Madrid (2025) and the class "Postinternet and photographicness" in the Master of Photography at the LENS School in Madrid (2024-2025). He has participated as a speaker at PhotoEspaña 2024 within the Imagen Futura cycle at Fundación Telefónica, at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2023) and as a guest at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (2024).
